Shot, reverse shot: When a shot of one character is taken looking at another character, and the shot is cut to a shot of the other character looking at the first character in the shot. 180 degree rule: When a shot is taken of two characters in a screen, the camera takes the picture from the side, so that one character is to the left and the other to the right. Jumping across this shot to the other side of the 180 degrees is called 'jumping the line'. Graphic match/match cut: A cut from one shot to another where the two shots are matched by the action or subject matter. Match on action/action match: A transition in which a shot cuts into another shot from a different view which matches the action started in the first shot. Eyeline match: Usually a shot of a character which is then cut to that character's point of view, allowing the audience to see through their eyes. Whip pan: A type of panning transition in which the camera pans so quickly that the camera becomes blurry and the shot is changed during this blur. Jump cut: A cut in which the shot does not change however the actors + props in the scene change position (making appearance of time passing). Smash cut: A transition where one shot abruptly cuts to another for aesthetic purposes. Invisible cut: A cut where the shot changes, however it appears as if it is still one continuous shot due to usually the camera passing into black or a still shot. Cross cut: An editing technique used to display two different scenes in separate locations which are happening at the same time (often used for phone calls). A cutaway: An shot interrupting the main action of the scene by inserting a view of something else. L cut: A type of editing transition in which the audio from the previous shot overlaps onto the next shot. J cut:
A type of editing transition in which the audio from the next shot begins on the shot before it (and continues).
